Some of the most breathtaking places of interest in Slovakia are celebrated by UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The World Heritage list honors the best international places of interest, including the numerous sites found in Slovakia. UNESCO “seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity.” With that in mind, it’s no wonder that the following places of interest in Slovakia were awarded this recognition.

The Slovakian Castle of Spis

The Slovakian Castle of Spis was awarded by UNESCO in 1993.
This Slovakian castle is one of the largest medieval castles in all of Central Europe.
For the first half of the 13th century, the Slovakian castle was surrounded by stone fortification which allowed it to resist raids from the Tatars in 1241.
The Slovakian fortifications were then strengthened by the Italians who constructed the Spisska Kapitula.

Spisske Podhradie

Spisske Podhradie is the Slovakian town below Spis castle, and was built in the 11th century. The Saxons settled in this little Slovakian town in the 12th and 13th centuries. The town became an important center for the crafts of Slovakia. Some other great sites in the town are the Church of the Virgin Mary in a 13th century Gothic style, and the Monastery and Church of the Mercedarians that was built in 1327. There’s also the Evangelical Church, the Jewish Synagogue from 1875, and the Slovakian Town Hall built in 1546.

Slovakian Gothic Church of Zehra

Zehra is an early-Gothic church of Slovakia built in 1245.
Inside the church you can see precious Slovakian frescoes adorning the walls. These are some of the oldest frescoes of Slovakia.
The most beautiful fresco is the Tree of Life, dominating the northern wall of the nave.
This very special fresco was painted in 1400, and is perfectly complimented by 13th century stone baptismal font, and a 17th century Slovakian altar and pulpit.

Spišská Kapitula

Spišská Kapitula is the religious capital of the Spis region of Slovakia.
The history of this region is connected to the history of the Spis Castle in Slovakia.
It sits on the eastern slope of the Martin’s hill, near Spisske Podhradie of Slovakia.

Slovakian Village of Vlkolinec

Vlkolinec is a picturesque Slovakian village near the town of Ruzomberok.
This city of Slovakia is famous for its wooden architecture that has been well preserved.
Over 40 identical wooden houses from the 15th to 19th centuries still remain today bearing all the charm of Slovakia.
The wooden Bell Tower dominates the horizon of this very special town in Slovakia.
See the Church of the Visit of the Virgin Mary built in 1875.
There’s also the wooden Well, and the Museum located in the Farmer’s House. Vlkolinec was honored by UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1883.
